Coloring your hair is a major time (and financial!) commitment, which is why you'll want to make sure you're using products that help protect your dye job rather than making it fade faster. One major offender of the latter? Shampoo.
“When choosing a color-preserving shampoo, you’ll want to stay away from a few ingredients that will always prematurely fade your hair color,” says hair stylist Justin Toves-Vincilione. He recommends steering clear of sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, sodium chloride, DEA, and propylene glycol because all of them strip hair color, but he says they also weaken hair and can dry out the scalp.

Hair stylist Frederic Aspiras agrees, saying it's important to stay away from shampoos that have color-stripping sulfates in them. But, when it comes to what your shampoo should have, Aspiras recommends looking for something with nourishing ingredients. "I recommend that my clients look for formulas with natural ingredients that prevent hair color from fading—also note the color and consistency of the shampoo," he says. "A good color-safe shampoo should be pearlized or opaque in color and have a rich consistency."
