IF YOUR TIKTOK feed looks like ours, then it’s probably flooded with influencer-endorsed mattress ads that promise better sleep with just the click of a button. But our Women’s Health editors have been testing beds for the past five years and found that mattress shopping requires tons of trial and error to make sense of all of the options out there boasting the latest tech. What you should focus on is a quality mattress that helps you sleep through the night without aches or pains.
"I think we take our mattress quality for granted," says Leia Rispoli, MD, an interventional pain management specialist and physiatrist. "It's an easy fix or an easy thing to at least try and upgrade, that I always tell patients to consider, especially with spine issues, because we spend half of our life on a mattress."

Finding the right mattress can be a long process with a lot of sleepless nights if you end up on the wrong bed. Everyone has different preferences, sleeping positions, and ailments—maybe you're a side sleeper or maybe you need a mattress for back pain.
Luckily for you, we did the research and testing to find the eight best mattresses that will hopefully fit your needs and sleeping style, whether you want a cooling pillow top or a bed under $1,000. Before we get into the best mattresses, here are the factors you need to consider to narrow down which bed is right for you.
What to Consider
Type Of Mattress
Most online mattress brands these days make two types of beds: memory foam and hybrid. Memory foam mattresses are made entirely of foam, usually with distinct layers, whether for cooling or providing pressure relief. Hybrid mattresses are a mix of foam and coils. Hybrids tend to be more supportive and firm, while memory foam beds are more budget-friendly.
Firmness Level
While you may think you want a plush, cloud-like mattress, a firm mattress is actually better for spinal support, according to Dr. Rispoli. "Anything that offers sort of a neutral spine alignment—and usually I find that moderately firm mattress aligns with that kind of concept—usually helps patients wake up with a little bit less pain and get a little bit more restful sleep," she says. Most of the mattresses on this list are medium to medium-firm.
Materials
You may spot a variety of certifications or labels on mattresses, like CertiPUR-US, Oeko-Tex Standard 100, and Global Organic Textile Standard, that signify their materials were sustainably sourced, are organic, or don’t contain toxins. The materials your mattress is made with are also important if you sleep hot. Hot sleepers should look for mentions of cooling materials, like gel-infused memory foam and Tencel, when searching for a new mattress.
Budget
You can easily spend thousands on a new mattress, but there are some great models under $1,000 as well. Like any product, spending more on a mattress doesn’t mean it will be the right fit for you. However, a higher price tag may mean higher quality materials and a longer lifespan. The mattresses in this guide range from $895 to $2,495 for a queen size.
Sleep Position
Your sleep position is crucial to know when buying a new mattress. Whether you sleep on your side, stomach, or back can have a big impact on the level of support you need to wake up pain-free. Back sleepers generally do well with a medium-firm mattress that provides some cushioning and support for their torso, while side sleepers need a bed that provides pressure relief for their shoulders and hips. However, stomach sleepers may require more trial and error to find a mattress that works for them, according to Dr. Rispoli.
Trial Period
Mattresses typically have a more generous return window to allow for the time it takes you to adjust to a new bed. Luckily, all of the mattresses on this list offer extensive trial periods, ranging from 90 to 365 nights, giving you ample time to determine whether the bed meets your needs.
How We Selected
I’m an experienced sleep and wellness writer and have been testing products, including mattresses and bedding, for nearly four years. I selected the best mattresses on the market by scouring customer reviews and online ratings to find mattresses with a range of features, materials, and price points.
I enlisted members of the Women’s Health team to test mattresses, evaluating temperature regulation, motion transfer, firmness, and more. I also wanted to explore whether these beds were good for all sleeping positions, hot sleepers, and those with back pain.
Our testers have been sleeping on their beds for months—some even years—which has culminated in the guide to the best eight mattresses for getting a sound sleep and good spinal alignment.
