As a clothing-obsessed style writer, few things frustrate me more than a white tee that’s see-through, shrinks after one wash, or hangs awkwardly. So over the past few months, I made it my mission to track down the best white t-shirts for women. It might seem simple, but the details matter: the perfect tee should have just the right amount of stretch, a flattering drape, and be thick enough to wear on its own.
Best White T-Shirts for Women
- Best Overall: Agolde Adine Shrunken Tee
- Best Budget:Uniqlo Crew Neck T-Shirt
- Best Relaxed Fit: Old Navy Vintage T-Shirt
- Best Structured: Cos Clean Cut T-Shirt
- Best Luxe: Vince Pima Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt
A white tee that ticks all those boxes is really the ultimate wardrobe essential, says celebrity stylist Julie Matos. It's the layering MVP that looks just as good with jeans as it does under a blazer. The tricky part is finding one that nails the trifecta of fabric, fit, and finish. Too often, white t-shirts are overly sheer, stiff, or cut in a way that doesn’t flatter the body. But after testing dozens, I can confirm: the perfect white t-shirt exists, and it’s worth the hunt.
So, are you ready to finally discover the perfect white tee that you can easily wear all year round? Start with this tried-and-tested guide.
Other White T-Shirts I Tried
Sezane is one of my favorite clothing brands, so I was expecting greatness from their iconic Conrad T-Shirt. I snagged this tee in white well before writing up this guide, and was wowed by the softness and perfectly oversized fit. Ultimately, I had to return it because it was a bit too see-through for the $50 price point.
There’s no lie in saying the fabric of this Buck Mason tee feels like butter—thanks, Supima cotton—and it's quite literally the perfect length. It hits just above the waist, so it works with low-, mid-, or high-rise jeans. However, like the Sezane option, it’s pretty see-through. I refuse to wear or recommend a see-through white top, and I find that no matter what color bra I wear, you can always see the full outline through this tee.
What to Consider
Materials
- Cotton: Matos swears by tees that are made from 100 percent cotton, as they're breathable, washable, and durable. She says organic cotton or Pima cotton tees (like the Agolde Adine Shrunken Tee or the Vince Pima Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt) are the absolute best. Pima cotton’s silkier fibers make it softer, stronger, and more likely to retain its shape over time. Similarly, organic cotton is softer than non-organic cotton because it’s processed by hand, but it isn’t necessarily more durable.
- Modal: Cotton-modal blends are also worth considering, as they hold their shape and drape well, Matos says. Modal, a wood pulp–based semi-synthetic fiber, is breathable, extra soft, and highly absorbent.
- Nylon: This ultra-smooth, lightweight fabric is known for its softness and breathability. It creates a sleek feel against the skin and holds up well over time. In a t-shirt, you’ll often find it blended with cotton, modal, or elastane.
- Elastane: Also known as spandex, elastane is often blended with other fabrics for stretch. It adds flexibility and makes a shirt feel more adaptive to your body.
Fit and Length
- Fit: Matos recommends having a few different styles on hand: a classic crew for layering, a relaxed fit for casual wear, and a cropped tee for high-waisted bottoms. Regardless of the style, your t-shirt should have a flattering, body-skimming fit that isn’t too tight or too loose. Unless you’re going for a specific look—like the contouring Aritzia Golden Butter Essential T-Shirt or the boxy Madewell Slub Crop Tee. For a classic fit, I suggest opting for the Agolde Adine Shrunken Tee, Uniqlo Crew Neck T-Shirt, or Vince Pima Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt.
- Length: T-shirt length should hit at or just below the top of the hip for versatility, says Matos. But a few lengths help you pair tees with different rises, from high-waisted to low-slung pants. This list includes cropped to hip-length options, each serving a distinct purpose. I love to wear my cropped tees under sweaters or with high trousers, and my longer options look super cute tucked into a skirt or baggy jeans.
How We Chose
I’m a style and shopping writer for Women’s Health, where I cover wardrobe essentials, including women’s underwear, bras, hoodies, jeans, and more. Over the past year, I vetted top-rated white T-shirts for women alongside my editorial team, including style contributor Lily Wohlner. I also tapped three stylists for their opinions.
For this guide, I tried over a dozen white t-shirts in timeless styles and a range of fits and lengths. I wore each tee for errands on hot days, layered under sweaters on chilly days, during long walks, out to brunch and fancy dinners, and everywhere in between.
I evaluated them based on materials, fit, length, and quality.
- Materials: Cotton reigns supreme for t-shirts, so I prioritized primarily cotton styles—like my top pick (the Agolde Adine Shrunken Tee), and my favorite budget-friendly option (the Uniqlo Crew Neck T-Shirt). There’s one exception on this list—the Aritzia Golden Butter Essential T-Shirt—made from a moisture-wicking blend of nylon and elastane that’s great for workouts or warm weather.
- Fit and length: While fit and length are personal preferences, I looked for t-shirts with a flattering, body-skimming fit—whether cropped, relaxed, fitted, or somewhere in between. Only the most versatile fits and lengths made it onto this guide. For reference, I am 5’ 5” with a 34B bra size and usually wear a size medium top.
- Quality: I evaluated every t-shirt I tested on a few factors to determine overall quality. I started by determining whether it was opaque enough to wear with only a nude bra underneath. I also wore and washed each shirt multiple times to determine how it held up in the washing machine and dryer. Plus, I looked at stitching, fabric thickness, collars, and hemlines for signs of durability. Only the white t-shirts that passed these tests made it onto this list.
