When building my skincare routine, sunscreen is a non-negotiable, but layering it under makeup can cause pilling and flaking. Sunscreen sometimes emphasizes my acne, large pores, or skin texture. Plus, they're not exactly shade-inclusive for deeper skin tones like mine. However, that’s where SPF makeup products comes into play. These lip balms, powders, and foundations provide an extra layer of protection and enhance my skin’s overall appearance.

Best SPF Makeup Products of 2026

And let’s be honest: most of us forget to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, which doctors recommend. Using SPF makeup helps reinforce our defense against UV rays, says dermatologist Noah Gratch, MD. While these products don't provide all-day sun protection, they do offer an extra layer of defense against UV rays. Using SPF makeup also encourages consistent use, as we need to reapply it at least every two hours. I like to wear mine while enjoying al fresco dining, park hangs, running errands, or any day I want extra sun coverage. Just remember that SPF makeup alone should not replace face sunscreen because the cosmetics don’t provide enough coverage on its own, he says.

Before jumping into my favorite makeup with sunscreen, let’s talk about how to shop so you don’t waste your precious time or money.

What to Consider

Before adding any SPF makeup to your routine, there’s a few key factors to keep in mind, including sunscreen filters, skincare ingredients that fade hyperpigmentation and lock in hydration, and SPF levels.

Active Ingredients

SPF makeup is made with either mineral or chemical active ingredients.

Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral sunscreen contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients create a physical barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin’s surface, says dermatologist Divya Shokeen, MD.

They provide immediate broad-spectrum coverage and won’t irritate sensitive and acne-prone skin. The trade-off? They can leave behind a cast on darker skin tones, but the color pigments in makeup help prevent this.

Chemical Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreen uses avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene as active ingredients for sun protection. These filters absorb solar rays and deflect their damaging effects by converting them into heat, says Dr. Shokeen. They’re less likely to leave behind an ashy finish, but they require a 15- to 20-minute waiting period before sun exposure.

Some SPF makeup, such as the Caliray Lipguard, combines both mineral and chemical filters for hybrid coverage—you get the instant shield of broad-spectrum protection and the invisible finish of chemical filters.

Other Helpful Ingredients

To enjoy even more benefits, look for cosmetics infused with proven skincare ingredients. While these inactive agents don’t protect your skin from the sun, they help enhance skin with hydration, soothing, and brightening effects to name a few.

  • Hyaluronic acidattracts moisture and helps plump up skin.
  • Vitamin C and tranexamic acid fade hyperpigmentation.
  • Ceramides help soothe dryness and lock in hydration.
  • Panthenol, also known as vitamin B5, soothes and hydrates the skin.
  • Iron oxides are found in tinted sunscreens and help protect against hyperpigmentation and blue light emitted from our devices.

SPF Level

When you’re already wearing a face sunscreen, layering makeup with SPF 15 to 30 is great for additional protection, says Dr. Gratch. Still, reapplication is the key to ensure your skin remains protected outdoors, says fellow dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD. An easy hack is to use a powder sunscreen, like the Brush On Block, as a finishing powder without smearing your other skincare products.

How We Chose

After chatting with the medical experts, I started with a testing pool of 16 SPF makeup products in 2025. Over three months of daily testing, I gradually narrowed down the options until I settled on the six featured picks. To level up the testing process in 2026, I tried 30 products and included categories previously not included, such as face primers, highlighters, bronzers, and nourishing lip balms. Beyond sunscreen filters, SPF levels, and helpful inactive ingredients, I also considered a few other factors:

Application

I gave major snaps to products that were easy to apply, whether with my fingers, brushes, or beauty sponges. (I’m a huge fan of BK Beauty brushes if you’re looking for new tools.) I evaluated how each performed with different skin issues like large pores, fine lines, and occasional pimples. I also paid attention to how easily these cream, powder, and liquid products blend onto my face. Were the liquids runny and messy to work with? If so, points were docked because I don't want my face makeup to drip down to my clothing.

Wearability and Reapplication

I wore each product through my full workday and tested them in real life situations—concerts, long walks, cross-country traveling, and events—to ensure the cosmetic benefits were long-lasting.

Since reapplication is key, I paid close attention to how easily I can layer my makeup throughout the day without looking cakey. Were the powders chalky or left behind an ashy finish? Did creams cause streaking or pilling? And did the liquids feel like a heavy cosmetic mask on my face, or were they so weightless that I forgot I was even wearing them?

Shade Inclusivity

Honestly, the market for SPF makeup was previously extremely limited. Thankfully, makeup brands have made strides to offer more diverse shade options. My best overall pick from Ilia is available in 30 shades. And they’re not all just slightly different fair shades. Plus, there are options for warm, cool, and olive undertones.

Ultimately, these are the beauty products I’ll be sporting all spring and summer long. They’re featherlight, blend effortlessly with my fingers, and help me feel confident in my daily life. The best part? Many of these have multiple uses, including the Brush on Block Powder Sunscreen and Colorescience Total Protection Balm which works on my lips, cheeks, and eye lids.

Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40

Pros

  • Ideal for dry or mature skin
  • Leaves behind a glowy finish
  • You can apply with your fingers

Cons

  • Provides minimal coverage

Ilia’s Super Serum is the one SPF makeup product I keep coming back to because it does it all. It makes my skin look and feel good, is packed with dermatologist-approved ingredients for major hydration, and it’s easy to apply and wear.

Plus, it’s a great fit for anyone with mature skin. Ilia is jam-packed with moisturizing superhero ingredients like hyaluronic acid and shea butter which is a must for people with dry, normal, and combination skin. It’s also enriched with squalane, which locks in moisture and enhances elasticity for bouncy, supple skin.

It even contains aloe vera, a low-key skincare superstar that has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe sunburns and provides hydration and restores the skin’s moisture barrier, says dermatologist Anna Chacon, MD. Rounding out the impressive ingredient list is soothing and wrinkle-reducing niacinamide, which helps calm redness, boost hydration, and even tackle adult acne—a common issue that affects women into their menopause, according to dermatologists in our guide to the best skincare products for your 40s.

Another important concern for mature skin? Dr. Gratch says many of his older patients miss their natural glow, and this face serum provides an instant cosmetic fix. Due to its natural appearance and comfortable feel, it’s a go-to choice for anyone seeking effective sun protection alongside light coverage in their everyday routine, he adds.

I love the convenience of Super Serum. I can apply it with my fingers instead of wasting extra product with a makeup sponge or brush. Using my fingers is easy, fast, and my natural body heat helps it blend smoothly. Plus, it’s way easier to wash my hands before and after application instead of cleansing a makeup brush and waiting for it to dry each day. Even without a face primer, Ilia doesn’t settle into my fine lines, which is a major win because I dislike a cakey look.

The only downside to this clean beauty pick is that it provides minimal coverage. On days my skin is behaving, this is a great option. However, when my complexion is temperamental, I prefer a medium to full coverage, which I can’t achieve with Ilia. That said, I’m still into this serum, and with summer on the way, it’ll be in heavy rotation to help achieve that glowy finish.

Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50

Pros

  • 3-in-1
  • Broad-spectrum, plus protection from pollution, blue light, and infrared radiation

Cons

  • During heatwaves it might soften a little

I love blush, but often my oily cheeks soak up the product, and the pigmentation starts to fade. I also wear a face mask on the train, which causes product transfer. While not ideal, Colorescience balm has a cream formula to achieve a buildable color without fading or smudging for a vibrant flush when the mood strikes. There are shades that work with all complexions, and some even have refined shimmer for a glowy finish. Others are deeper browns and terracottas to help us look like we came back from a beach weekend.

But what really sets it apart from other blushes with sunscreen is that Colorescience can be used multiple ways. It works as a cream blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick, making it a must-have in my work tote or when traveling, when precious space is limited. I prefer using my fingers to dab the 3-in-1 product onto my eyes and lips. The monochromatic look is always flattering and creates the illusion that I put in more effort than I really did.

Of course, sun protection is paramount—and Colorescience nailed it with this one. Offering impressive broad-spectrum SPF 50 coverage, it also contains proprietary EnviroScreen Technology, a mix of antioxidants, that guards the skin against pollution that causes aging and hyperpigmentation, blue light from our smart devices, and infrared radiation that causes skin damage.

Just keep in mind this 3-in-1 balm might melt a little if it’s shipped during the dog days of summer or if you store it somewhere hot for an extended period of time.

Conceal & Protect SPF 50+

Pros

  • Covers redness and acne
  • Hydrating formula

Cons

  • It can target dark spots, but I haven’t seen much difference yet

Co-founded by makeup artist Nikki Derorest—Alexandra Daddario, Simone Ashley, and Phoebe Dynevor are clients—all of the Ciele products I tested marry form with function. However, if I could only pick one, it would undoubtedly be this concealer.

Dealing with angry pimples that pop up on your face right before a big event? Same! I dab this on to hide and diffuse zits, and the finish is like a beauty filter IRL. My dark circles are instantly less noticeable, while my facial redness is significantly reduced with this concealer. It features a creamy texture that provides a natural, skin-like finish for everyday wear. I can also instantly build up to full coverage for a seamless, flawless look. It blends out easily with my fingers, but I get the most impressive finish when I use the Ciele dual-ended brush or myBK Beauty concealer brush.

What I love most is that it uses mineral ingredients, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, to protect my skin from the sun with zero irritation. It also contains tranexamic acid (TXA), which is lauded by dermatologists, including Dr. Camp, for its ability to improve hyperpigmentation and melasma. It’s a mild ingredient that’s usually well-tolerated when paired with other ingredients, including niacinamide, kojic acid, and tretinoin. While I haven’t yet experienced significant improvement in dark spots, I still find Ciele an enjoyable and trustworthy concealer in my rotation.

Pros

  • Safe for eczema-prone skin
  • Fragrance- and alcohol-free

Cons

  • Leaves oily skin greasy, so use a powder

Sensitive skin like mine is tough to care for because I want minimal ingredients that won’t accidentally irritate my skin. As a significant part of my job involves testing products, I understand how challenging this can be. Whether you’re dealing with eczema, redness, or flaking caused by retinol, Tower 28 is for you. It also hasn’t irritated my skin the night before. In fact, it helped cover up facial redness.

Whenever I want fuller coverage, Tower28 is my go-to foundation. It has a light to medium coverage, ideal for days when you want to show off your freckles and moles. But don’t worry, it still provides enough coverage for adult acne. I use my BK Beauty 101 Foundation Brush to apply and blend this genius product. It also feels so weightless on my face that I often forget I'm wearing foundation until I look in a mirror. Genius!

The only thing to be wary of is if you have oily skin. This one adds a radiance to the skin that can quickly turn greasy if I don’t set it with a powder. However, if you have normal, combination, or dry skin, then this is for you.

Brush On Block SPF 30 Mineral Powder Sunscreen New Formula, With Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, & Vitamin C, Broad Spectrum, Water Resistant, Translucent, For All Skin Types, Reef Friendly, Mfg in USA

Pros

  • Multipurpose
  • Invisible finish with no flashback

Cons

  • At $36, it’s on the pricier side

I have oily skin and need to set my makeup with powder, or else I look like a disco ball within an hour. Brush On Block has replaced my traditional face powder. The oil-absorbing SPF makeup doesn’t cause flashback in pictures, and the translucent shade is legit invisible on my caramel complexion. The powder leaves my skin looking velvet-matte, rather than flat and overly powdery.

Dr. Camp highlights this as a winning pick due to the ingredients. The combination of zinc oxide, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin C moisturizes and protects the skin from environmental stressors.

It’s also equipped with a built-in brush featuring fluffy bristles that don’t scratch my reactive skin. Brush On Block features a convenient container that’s essentially mess-proof. I brought mine to dinner and didn’t realize it was unlocked until I tried reapplying. There was zero residue in my bag, which was a major win. I simply twist the base to unlock the powder, then pop the top, push down the transparent cover, and apply the SPF makeup. It’s also the only featured refillable pick, which helps me minimize excessive plastic waste and save money since each case lasts me about a month.

Honestly, the only downside is that you’re spending $36 for a face sunscreen, but it can be used multiple ways. I’ve been using this SPF makeup on and off for two years and can fully attest that it’s worth owning.

Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream

Pros

  • Acts as a SPF, color corrector, moisturizer, concealer, primer, and anti-aging serum
  • Natural finish
  • Available in full and mini sizes

Cons

  • Skip if you don’t like rich creamy textures

I’ve been using this epic CC cream on and off since July 2019 after makeup artist Lucas Dean introduced me to it. Despite walking a mile in the hot and humid outdoors, the coverage lasted from the afternoon until I washed my face at night.

So what makes it so effective? Beyond a mix of chemical sunscreen filters to guard my skin from the sun, IT Cosmetics combines all of the benefits of a full coverage foundation, concealer, and makeup primer with the skin benefits of a CC cream. Thanks to a trifecta of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and vitamin E, it provides moisturizing and anti-aging benefits.

The best part? I only need a single pump of product to do my entire face, making it a reliable one and done product when I’m in the mood for full coverage glam. A single tube of CC Cream+ easily lasts me at least three months, depending on how frequently I use it. I also appreciate that the brand initially started with a handful of colors but now offers 30 flexible shades.

Now for the downside: Honestly, it was hard to think of one, but I’d say you should skip this pick if you don’t like rich creamy textures. I typically wear the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation, so I’m used to something a little heavier but I understand if that might be a dealbreaker from some who prefer slightly lightweight products. Still, I’m a huge fan of this product and will continue using it for years to come.

On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Sunscreen Makeup Setting Spray SPF 28

Pros

  • Sweat-resistant
  • Available in 2 sizes

Cons

  • Not ideal if you want a matte finish

During Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour, her makeup artist Rokael Lizama revealed that he used the On 'Til Dawn Mattifying Waterproof Setting Sprayon Queen Bey. The brand created a new version that still keeps your makeup locked and ready for summer adventures with added sun protection. A quick spritz of this ultra-fine spray helps ensure your cosmetics stays in place for up to 16 hours. It’s sweat-resistant for up to 80 minutes—hello, Beyonce-themed dance parties and wedding season glam—without leaving behind a sticky feeling or tell-tale white cast.

So how does it work? Green tea extract helps minimize the appearance of pores (goals TBH) and witch hazel helps mattify skin and controls excess oil. Just remember to hold the can about 10 to 12 inches away from your face to avoid the liquid from forming blobs on your face.

Keep in mind this might not be the setting spray for you if you prefer a dewy finish. It’s really designed for my fellow oily and combination skin ladies and those of us who plan on being outside for the majority of the day.

Cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson is well-regarded in the beauty industry—he’s had stints formulating products everywhere from Estee Lauder to Hailey Bieber’s Rhode. His skincare line BeautyStat provides high performance without breaking my summer travel budget—and his Lip Serum is well-worth incorporating into your routine. For starters, it offers sun protection by using zinc oxide. The gentle mineral filter can sometimes leave behind an ashy finish, but not Lip Serum. Instead, four pink and brown shades (Baby Pink, Neutral Peach, Mocha, and Butter Beige) leave behind a touch of color. My current favorite is the featured Butter Beige, with Mocha being a close second, especially when layered over nude pink lipstick.

Additionally, it’s enriched with vitamin C to brighten discoloration and glucosamine for hydration. Together the hyaluronic acid and peptides help temporarily plump my lip lines for a fuller pout without the painful fillers. It’s subtle, natural, and leaves my lip feeling soft and supple.

I enjoy the orange-vanilla scent because it reminds me of a creamsicle and warm days outdoors. However, if you’re not into either citrus or gourmand aromas then this might not be the SPF makeup for you.

Lipguard SPF 31Lip Gloss

Pros

  • Non-sticky feel
  • High shine

Cons

  • Reconsider if you have a nut allergy

Our lips need protection, too. Most lip SPFs are overly sticky, and my hair inevitably gets caught on my pout. However, Caliray provides ample sheen without a gooey, adhesive feeling. The cushiony texture glides across my lips and feels moisturizing, almost like I’m swiping on an elegant lip balm. I credit shea butter for making my lips genuinely softer, and nourished since incorporating Lipguard into my routine.

Caliray’s doe-foot applicator is also the perfect size for the lips, especially with its slightly pointed tip, which suits the corners of my mouth. I genuinely adore the doe-foot applicator that is the perfect size for my bow-shaped lips.

I’m also impressed by the semi-sheer tints that look great on their own or when layered with a lip liner or lipstick. My go-to shades during the summer have been Zuma, a soft pink, and Trestles, a neutral brown. Now that fall is around the corner, I’m gravitating toward Big Sur, a rosewood mauve. The color lasts for about 90 minutes before it begins to fade, which I’m fine with since it’s recommended to reapply every two hours in the sun.

The only reason to avoid using this gloss is if you have a nut allergy. It’s infused with sweet almond oil, a hydrating and line-smoothing ingredient. If a nut reaction doesn’t apply to you, then Caliray is worth owning.
