Having your first child has a way of turning your home into a baby showroom almost overnight. I live in a one-bedroom flat, so I am very picky about what gets to take up space.

That's why the Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed appealed to me straight away. It is designed as an all-in-one sleep solution compact enough to work in a smaller home, but not a short-term newborn fix. It can be used from birth up to around five years, starting as a cot and then adapting into a toddler bed with added parts to make it grow with your baby.

The Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed converts from cot to crib to toddler bed

Right now, it works brilliantly in our one-bedroom flat because it does not take over the room. But when we eventually upsize and baby has their own bedroom, we will still be able to use the same cot. So many baby products become redundant quickly, so anything that grows with your child – and saves you buying the next stage a few months later – instantly feels more worthwhile.

Stokke does that signature Scandinavian, simple but chic design so well, and the Nighti is no different. It is clean and minimal, with rounded corners that make it feel more elevated and much less clunky in a small space.

How I tested

I tested the Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed at home in our one-bedroom flat, which I think is a pretty good way to work out whether a ‘compact’ cot actually feels it in real life. I looked at how it fitted into our bedroom, whether it felt too bulky and whether the quality matched how lovely it looks.

What is the Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed?

The Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed is a new compact cot bed from Stokke, designed to be practical, long-lasting and easy to fit into homes. It can be used from birth up to around five years, which is the bit that really makes it stand out for me.

It comes with an extension kit, so it can adapt as your baby grows, and the side rails can be removed gradually when your little one is ready to move towards more independent sleep.

It is made from FSC-certified European beechwood and has the kind of soft, rounded, minimal design you would expect from Stokke. It also comes with a mattresses, fitted sheets and extension kit, which makes the price feel easier to justify.

Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed review: my honest experience

It actually saves space

This is the biggest selling point for me. Our baby’s sleep space is in our bedroom, so we needed something that felt safe and sturdy, but did not completely take over the room.

The Nighti really works for that. It is noticeably smaller than many other cots, so it feels like a great compact option if you want to keep your baby close in the early months but don’t want to invest in a temporary option.

The rounded corners make more of a difference than I expected. In a bigger room, you might not think twice about them. In a flat, where you are constantly squeezing past furniture and carrying the baby, they make it less awkward to live around.

It will not be redundant in a few months

This is where I think the Nighti really earns its place. So much baby kit has such a short lifespan. You buy it, use it constantly for a few months, and then suddenly your baby has outgrown it and you are left wondering where on earth to put it.

The Nighti avoids that. It can be used from birth up to around five years, and the extension kit is included, so it is not a case of buying the cot and then immediately needing to spend more money to make it last.

I really like the idea that it works for us now, in a one-bedroom flat, but will still work later when we have more space and my baby has their own room. That feels like real value to me – not just because it saves money, but because it saves the faff of constantly researching the next thing.

The quality is seriously good

You can tell straight away that this is not a flimsy bit of baby furniture. I had heard great things about Stokke as a brand, and this really proves the point. The quality and durability feel top-notch, which is reassuring when it is something your baby will be sleeping in every night.

The wood feels beautiful, the finish is smooth and the whole thing has that solid, well-made feel you want from a big baby purchase. It is made from FSC-certified European beechwood, has GREENGUARD certification and comes with a seven-year warranty, which all adds to the sense that it is built to last. And, let’s be honest, it needs to be. If I'm planning to use it for the next five years, I want it to still look smart and feel sturdy by the end of them!

There is also careful consideration for sleep safety, with a breathable mattress, open sides for airflow and gently rounded edges. The newborn mesh liner also helps create a safe and comfortable sleep set-up from the very beginning.

The included extras are a big plus

Another thing I appreciate is that the Nighti comes with the extension kit, mini mattress, mini fitted sheet, bed fitted sheet and bed mattress. That might not sound hugely exciting, but if you have bought baby products before, you will know how quickly the extras add up.

It also makes the whole thing feel less complicated. You are not trying to work out which mattress fits or whether you have bought the right sheets. It's one less thing to think about, which is always welcome in the newborn stage.

It is an investment

There's no denying this is an investment buy. But I do think the longevity makes the price easier to justify. Because it's designed to last from birth to around five years, you are not buying something that only covers one short stage. You are buying one cot that can grow with your child, move with your home and save you from needing to replace it a few months down the line.

Is the Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed worth it? The WH verdict

For me, the fact it grows with your child makes the Stokke Nighti Convertible Cot Bed 100% worth it. It works from birth, adapts as your baby gets older and feels high-quality enough to actually last.

Right now, it suits our flat perfectly. But when we eventually move somewhere bigger and my baby, hopefully, has their own bedroom, we will not need to start again with a new cot. There is something really lovely and quite sentimental about that too.

So many baby products are useful for a few months and then suddenly redundant. The Nighti feels like the opposite. It is practical now, but it is also designed with the next stage in mind.

The price is undeniably steep for a cot, but the quality really is next level. The premium materials, finish, rounded corners and overall sturdiness match the price point. And when it's something your baby will sleep in every night until they are five, it feels like an investment that pays for itself.
