We can all agree kids should be outside more. And with one of the best parenting mantras being ‘just add water,’ that usually means puddles, paddling and plenty of soggy clothes. Which is great (a happy child, after all, spells a happy parent), until the moment comes to peel off damp, sandy layers and wrestle an unwilling body back into something dry. That's when the chills, complaints and logistical faff set in. Enter: kids changing robes – the throw-on solution that keeps them warm, covered and car seat-ready in seconds.

Changing robes (often mistakenly referred to by the brand name Dryrobe), are essentially roomy, waterproof coats or towelling ponchos that double as a mobile changing hut. They have absorbent linings to help soak up post-swim moisture and can stand up to anything and everything the great outdoors (or your messy kids) can throw at them.

Best kids changing robes at a glance

So far, so good. But you might have seen the price tags attached to the best changing robes and balked – and fair enough. You don't want to invest in a product you're not sure will perform or your kids will like, let alone something they'll grow out of in five minutes.

Luckily, not only are kids changing robes typically less expensive than their adult counterparts, with some excellent budget options out there, but the best ones also come in versatile sizing that grows with your child. Add in plenty of fun colours and prints to suit even the fussiest dresser, and they start to feel like a much smarter buy.

Still, with so many options on the market, knowing which ones are actually worth it can be tricky. To save you from buyer's remorse, we've tested the best kids changing robes to shop in 2026, plus outlined exactly what to look for when making your purchase.

After one for yourself? We've also tested the best changing robes for adults.

What to consider when shopping for a kids changing robe

Not all changing robes are created equal. Here's what to keep in mind before you buy:

    Type

Changing robes generally fall into two camps: lightweight towelling ponchos and waterproof, fleece-lined coats. The right one depends on how (and when) your child will use it. ‘A towel changing robe is perfect for sunny days spent on the shoreline, or for drying off quickly at your local indoor pool,’ says Gideon Bright, founder of Dryrobe. ‘However, if your family is out there in all weathers, a fully waterproof changing robe is essential.’

    Protection

If your child is the type to be outside year-round, protection should be high on your checklist. Look for waterproof outer shells and quick-drying linings that won't stay soggy between uses. ‘If they're getting outside year-round, look for high-performance protection,’ says Bright. ‘A waterproof rating of 25,000mm is essential to protect them from torrential downpours, while a fast-drying inner lining means they can use it multiple times a day without it feeling damp.’

    Size

Changing robes are designed to be oversized – that's part of the appeal – and kid's sizing tends to span a wider range for greater cost-per-wear. The roomy fit gives kids space to change underneath and layer up, while also meaning they won't outgrow it overnight. If you're between sizes, it's usually worth sizing up to get more wear out of it.

    Quality and durability

These are pieces designed to take a beating – from sand, saltwater and mud to being stuffed in the boot week after week. ‘Durability is key when choosing a changing robe for your child,’ says Bright. ‘Look for designs that are built to last, so your kids can depend on them for years to come.’ It's also worth checking the materials: recycled fabrics are common in waterproof styles, while towelling robes often use organic cotton for a softer, more eco-conscious finish.

    Extras

The details can make a big difference. Fleece-lined hand-warmer pockets are standard on waterproof styles, but you might also want to look out for internal pockets (handy for stashing pants or small essentials), adjustable hoods and cuffs, and side splits for easier changing. A sturdy hanging loop is another small but mighty feature – especially when you're battling for space on crowded changing room pegs.

      How we test

      best kids changing robes tested

Each of the kids changing robes below has been tried and tested by a child, nephew or niece of the Women's Health team, after first being thoroughly vetted by our editors. Where applicable, we assessed waterproofing under the shower, along with lining absorbency and warmth, sizing, extra features and overall durability.

Only then were they handed over to our mini testers (whose ages span one to 12) to see how they perform in the great outdoors. They've been worn on the beach, thrown on after swims at local pools and put through their paces on coastal walks – so we know how they hold up in real-life conditions. The towelling varieties have also been deployed during the UK's recent heatwave, accompanying our kids to lidos, beaches and – of course – giant paddling pools in the garden.

For the waterproof, coat-style robes (Red, Dryrobe and Regatta), we've also tested the adult versions over several years, so can vouch for their quality, waterproofing, drying and insulating capabilities.

      Pros

      • Excellent value for money
      • Packs down small – ideal for travel
      • Generous, practical sizing for easy changing
      • Warm, soft lining and solid waterproofing

      Cons

      • Small hanging loop
      • No adjustable hood or side splits

If you're after a no-fuss option that does the job (and then some) without the hefty price tag, this Regatta robe is hard to beat. It's a waterproof, coat-style design with a soft, fluffy lining that keeps kids warm post-swim. It's not quite as plush as premium options, but still cosy enough to stave off chills on breezy beach days or after pool sessions.

In testing, we were impressed by how practical it is. The oversized fit (we tried the 9–13 years) gave our 12-year-old tester plenty of room to change underneath, with enough space to grow into. (Plus this robe has one of the best size ranges we've seen.) It also packs down smaller than many competitors, making it a great shout for travel or stuffing into an already full kit bag.

On the outside, it feels more like a traditional raincoat, but that comes with solid waterproof protection. There's a two-way zip with an easy-grip pull, Velcro-adjustable cuffs and a couple of handy pockets – including fleece-lined hand warmers and an internal chest pocket.

You won't find loads of technical extras here (no adjustable hood or side splits), add the hanging loop is disappointingly short, but for the price, it covers all the essentials. Plus, it comes in a range of colours and limited-edition patterns kids will actually want to wear (our pink-mad tester was thrilled with this Cath Kidston Puppy Floral design).

      Dryrobe Kids Advance Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Exceptionally warm, cocoon-like feel
      • Huge range of colours and designs
      • Outstanding waterproofing (25,000mm rating)
      • Fast-drying lining for repeated use

      Cons

      • More expensive than most
      • Bulky to pack and no hanging loop

If warmth is your top priority, nothing we tested comes close to the Dryrobe Advance. This is the bulkiest option in our round-up – but that's exactly why it's so good. With its thick sherpa fleece lining and fully waterproof outer shell (rated up to 25,000mm for protection against extreme rain), it creates a proper cocoon of warmth that keeps kids toasty even in seriously cold, blustery conditions.

Performance-wise, it's built for repeated use. The fast-drying lining dries up to eight times quicker than many competitors, so it won't stay damp between dips – ideal for beach days or back-to-back swim sessions.

It's packed with practical details, too. The two-way zip features a chunky rubber pull that's easy to grip with cold hands, while a fleece-lined chin guard helps prevent irritation when it's fully zipped up. Inside, there's plenty of thoughtful storage: a zipped valuables pocket, a roomy pouch (ideal for a hot water bottle or dry clothes) and deep, fleece-lined hand-warmer pockets.

The oversized fit leaves loads of room for changing underneath, with side splits adding extra ease of movement. It is undeniably bulky – so less ideal for travel – and pricier than most, but if your child is regularly out in all weathers, it's a serious bit of kit that will last for years.

Red Kids' Towelling Poncho Changing Robe

      Kids' Towelling Poncho Changing Robe
Best towelling changing robe for kids

Red Kids' Towelling Poncho Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Lightweight, packable and quick-drying
      • Soft, comfortable microfibre towelling
      • Deep, practical pockets
      • Great for pool use (large hanging loop and name label)

      Cons

      • Not suitable for cold or wet weather
      • Less warm than fleece-lined waterproof styles

If your child's water adventures are more poolside than windswept beach, a towelling robe like this Red poncho is a brilliant (and far more packable) alternative to bulkier waterproof styles. Made from a soft, microfibre-feel 100% cotton towelling, it's lightweight but still absorbent enough to dry them off quickly post-swim.

In testing, this was a hit with our younger swimmers. My niece (a tall five-year-old) tried the 5–8 years size and it fit perfectly, with an 84cm length offering good coverage without swamping her. The oversized shape, short sleeves and side splits make changing underneath easy, while the hood adds extra warmth straight out of the water.

It's also one of the more practical towelling options we've come across. Deep pockets on either side are perfect for stashing cold hands – or the inevitable collection of shells and ‘interesting’ pebbles – while a large hanging loop and internal name label make it ideal for busy pool days.

      Best towelling poncho for coverage

Dryrobe Kids Organic Towel Changing Robe

      Kids Organic Towel Changing Robe
      Best towelling poncho for coverage

Dryrobe Kids Organic Towel Changing Robe

      Pros

      • Excellent coverage thanks to longer sleeves
      • Highly absorbent, soft organic cotton
      • Plenty of room for changing and growing into
      • Ideal for beach days and pool use

      Cons

      • No pockets or hanging loop
      • Less practical for busy changing rooms than some others

If coverage is a concern, this Dryrobe poncho is a winner. Made from 100% organic cotton, it has a more traditional towel feel than microfibre styles – thicker, super absorbent and ideal for wrapping kids up after long beach days or swim sessions.

What sets it apart is the design. The ¾-length sleeves offer more coverage than most ponchos, helping to block UV, keep out draughts and avoid that post-swim chill, while still leaving enough room to change comfortably underneath. Side splits add extra ease of movement, and the hood is a welcome touch for warming up quickly.

In testing, the 5–9 years size (67cm length) was a little baggy on our four-year-old tester, but gives him plenty of room to grow – making it a solid investment for younger kids. As a small boy who refuses to wear many clothes once the paddling pool comes out, it's telling that he'll make an exception for this.

We're also big fans of the wide, versatile size range on this one, but it is fairly stripped back – there are no pockets, hanging loop or name tag. That said, if you want something well-made and highly absorbent that does exactly what it promises, this delivers.

      Pros

      • Packed with thoughtful, practical features
      • Lightweight and more packable than bulkier options
      • Warm, soft lining with comfortable detailing
      • Excellent fit with room to grow and change underneath

      Cons

      • May be more features than some families need
      • A bit pricier than basic options

Looking for a do-it-all option that balances warmth, practicality and packability? Say hello to the Red Alter EVO Pro. It earns the crown for ‘best kids changing robe’ as it's the the most feature-packed robe we tested – and it delivers on all fronts.

Despite its impressive spec, it's noticeably lighter and more streamlined than bulkier rivals, making it far easier to pack for holidays or throw in the boot. The outer shell is fully waterproof, while the plush lining keeps kids warm without feeling overly heavy. Thoughtful touches run throughout: the sleeves are lined with a thinner fleece for easier movement, while the placket features a soft polar fleece that doubles as a chin guard for added comfort.

Fit-wise, the 8–13 years size was spot on for our nine-year-old tester, with that all-important room to grow. There's plenty of space to change underneath, helped by side splits and added venting. A peaked hood with toggle adjustments, two-way zip with large pulls, fleece-lined hand-warmer pockets and a roomy internal pouch all add to its practicality – as do the large hanging loop and name tag (a must for busy swim spots).

In short: it's warm, waterproof, well-designed and genuinely easy to live with – plus it comes in some seriously gorgeous colours.

      Decathlon Baby Cotton Changing Poncho

      Decathlon Baby Cotton Changing Poncho

      Pros

      • Clever popper design makes changing easier
      • Lightweight, absorbent and quick-drying
      • Wide shape helps with drying and wrapping
      • Adorable designs at a great price

      Cons

      • Thin fabric picks up fluff easily
      • Less warm than thicker towelling or fleece-lined options

Babies might not need all the bells and whistles, but they do need something that makes post-swim or beach changes as fuss-free as possible (as do tired parents) – and this adorable Decathlon poncho delivers. Equal parts cute and practical, it's a simple towelling option that works as well on the beach as it does bath time.

The standout feature is the clever popper design: a single fastening under each arm means you can fully open it out, lay your baby down and wrap them up without any wriggly battles. The wide cut (63cm across and 53cm long in the 1–3 years size) also gives you plenty of fabric to work with – ideal for drying little limbs before getting them dressed.

The cotton towelling is on the thinner side, so it dries quickly and packs down easily, but still feels soft and absorbent against delicate skin. In testing, the 1–3 years size looked very cute on our one-year-old tester, and there's no doubt it will serve her well for a couple more years.

And yes, the design is of course a big draw here. With sweet details like fringing and a hood with little ears, it's undeniably adorable – with other options including a blue monkey and a pink giraffe if lions aren't their thing.

Why is a changing robe a good idea for kids?

‘Can't I just wrap them in a towel?’, we hear you ask. And yes – you certainly can. In warmer weather, that might be all your child needs. But in anything other than sweltering temperatures – or when you're facing a long car journey home – keeping them warm, dry and comfortable quickly becomes the priority (for everyone's sake).

That's where a changing robe comes into its own. Not only does it help them warm up faster and keep chills (and the inevitable moaning) at bay, but it also means they can stay out for longer without getting cold. When it's time to head home, the roomy fit means you can dry them off properly and get them fully changed underneath, avoiding any blasts of windchill on bare skin.

‘Because of their versatility, your kids will use their changing robe far more than you'd ever expect,’ says Gideon Bright, founder of Dryrobe. ‘Whether they're drying quickly after getting out of the water, changing out of swimwear in privacy on the beach, staying warm on the sideline at sporting events, or keeping cosy on camping trips, a changing robe is an incredibly useful piece of kit.’

That oversized fit is key, too. ‘The roomy design makes it easy to layer over what your child is wearing, providing extra warmth when they need it,’ Bright adds. ‘Its size means a changing robe will last them for years to come, and can be passed down to younger siblings when they finally grow out of it.’
