I’ll be honest—working out in shorts was never my thing. I’ve always been more of a leggings girl. I used to think flowy shorts felt too exposed and compression shorts weren’t flattering. But since I'm a style writer who lives a pretty active lifestyle, I figured it was time to give athletic shorts a real shot. Now, after testing over 20 pairs of workout shorts over the past year, I can officially say I’m a convert.

Alongside stylists and other WH editors, I tested the internet's most popular workout shorts. Over the past two years, we evaluated them based on coverage, moisture-wicking abilities, comfort, size range, and fit. The result? A list of six fantastic pairs that we recommend for all types of workouts, including running, HIIT training, yoga, Pilates, and more.
What to Consider
Fabric
Fabric is everything when it comes to workout shorts—look for lightweight, sweat-wicking materials that move with you, not against you. According to Saladino, it's best to steer clear of cotton when looking for athletic shorts, as it doesn't wick away moisture as well as materials like polyester and nylon. After all, you want to make sure you're staying totally dry in your workout shorts (because who wants sweat stains down there?).
- Polyester: Polyester is a popular fabric in workout shorts (and activewear in general) because it's lightweight, durable, and resistant to shrinking and stretching. It wicks moisture away from the body, helping to keep you dry during higher intensity workouts. Plus, it dries quickly and holds its shape well.
- Spandex: Also known as elastane, this is a lightweight, elastic fabric that will give your shorts that stretchy feel and allow you to move freely through every workout.
Rise
Most shorts on this list are high-rise, which we found to have the most coverage and look the most flattering during our workouts, as they offer flattering tummy control. Many high-rise shorts also have a drawstring, which helps you customize the fit so it doesn't slip down or ride up while you're getting a sweat on. Some of the options we tried were low-rise, but we ended up ditching most of them because we didn't love the fit. However, the Arc'teryx pair on this list is low-rise, and we actually love that it sits nicely on our hips and looks flattering.
Length
When it comes to the best length for workout shorts, you want to think about the inseam length, AKA the distance between the crotch area and the bottom of the short. There are some longer options for those who prefer more leg coverage (ideal for burpees and squats!), and super short options on this list if you like a lightweight mini short for running or walking. After testing, we prefer something right in the middle that makes us feel nimble but also provides coverage, like our favorite of the bunch, The Gym People High Waist Shorts.
Activity
After testing, we found that some shorts are better for specific activities. For example, the Beyond Yoga pair is great for yoga because it’s super stretchy and buttery soft, so it’s easy to move in, whether you’re in downward dog or trying to master crow pose. On the other hand, the Arc'teryx pair is low-rise, super light, and has a snug fit, making it ideal for running since it feels weightless and doesn't slow us down.
How We Chose
We first compiled this list in July 2024. Since then, Women’s Health editors continued to put biker shorts, compression shorts, running shorts, and more through their paces to find the best options for every workout. For this June 2026 update, I re-tested some of our faves and put more than 20 shorts through their paces, evaluating them based on fit, rise, coverage, breathability, weight, and more. The testing process was led by me, with help from style contributor Lily Wohlner and stylists Rose Lauture and Kristen Saladino. Our evaluation involved multiple phases, consulting workout fanatics on the Women's Health team, and most importantly, testing the shorts firsthand. We subjected each short to everything from running to fast walks, to HIIT workouts, to Pilates and cycling. The narrowed-down list below includes the six shorts that impressed us most.
