As a health and fitness editor, I know my way around an athleisure store and can list off my favorite leggings, sports bras, and sneakers in seconds. But I’m slightly ashamed to say that when it comes to the best women’s underwear, I’m a little more clueless and have been wearing the same pairs I’ve had since high school—up until recently.
Best Hipster Underwear
- Best Overall: Aerie Superchill Original Cotton Boybrief Underwear
- Most Stylish: Skims Logo Picot Hipster
- Most Durable: ThirdLove 24/7 Classic Hipster Panty
- Least Visible: Bombas Women's No Show Hipster
- Thinnest Fabric: Quince Organic Cotton Hipster
Needless to say, it was time for a major upgrade. I tested my way through our staff’s favorite underwear brands, and these pairs win out when it comes to comfort, breathability, and style.
What to Consider
Materials
When shopping for underwear, material is one of the biggest factors to keep in mind apart from style. Fabric experts and gynecologists recommend keeping an eye out for fabrics like cotton, nylon, spandex, polyester, and modal:
- Cotton: This natural fiber is a popular choice for underwear because it's super breathable and gentle on the skin, says gynecologist Dr. Alyssa Dweck, MS, MD, FACOG. Organic cotton is especially useful for those with very sensitive skin, she says. It’s often found in the gusset (a piece of fabric sewn into the crotch of your undies), since a cotton gusset helps keep things dry and hygienic.
- Lyocell and modal: Lyocell and modal are semi-synthetic fabrics known for their ultra-soft feel (even softer than cotton). They are naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, says fabric expert Cathy Rust, making them a popular choice for underwear. They are also very stretchy with a somewhat silky feel.
- Synthetics: Synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester, and elastane are often used in underwear to provide durability and wick away moisture. Most commonly used is elastane, which gives fabric that elastic, stretchy feel. Nylon and polyester are especially durable, hold shape well, and resist shrinking. While these fabrics are not inherently moisture-wicking on their own, Rust says, many brands will use weave techniques that promote the movement of moisture away from the body.
How We Chose
To curate a list of the best hipster underwear for women, I tested dozens of pairs of underwear for weeks at a time as I worked out, walked around New York City, where I live, slept, and went to work. I also consulted experts on what to look for when it comes to shopping for underwear, and made sure to factor their advice into my picks. Additionally, I washed and dried these pairs in the laundry several times to make sure they held up in the durability category. The pairs that came out on top are winners when it comes to comfort, fit, breathability, visibility (or lack thereof), and style.
