After testing more than 50 sweatpants over the past two years, I can confidently say today’s best sweatpants for women are no longer reserved for bed rotting on lazy Sundays. I’ve worn top-rated styles with a white t-shirts, styled them with my go-to wool coat for running errands, and paired them with an oversized hoodie while WFH. The difference between frumpy and fashionable comes down to fabric, fit, and style: today’s standouts are made with soft, stretchy, and moisture-wicking materials that are a cinch to move in and hold their shape well. And thanks to activewear all-stars like lululemon and Alo Yoga, modern sweats feel polished enough to wear beyond the couch—without sacrificing comfort.

What to Consider
Material
Softness is a must when it comes to sweatpants, and stylist Jackie Schiavone says the right material is key.
- Cotton: Cotton is the most common fabric in sweatpants, as it’s made from thin, flexible fibers that make it super soft. If you want even more comfort, Schiavone suggests sweatpants with a light fleece lining, which helps them stay soft and cozy even after multiple washes. For the colder months, celebrity stylist Kim Appelt says to buy sweats made completely out of cotton-based fleece or terry cloth, as they’ll keep you warm without compromising on style.
- Elastane: If you want something that's cozy and also easy to move in, look for cotton blends that include stretchy materials like elastane (AKA spandex), says Appelt.
- Polyester: Polyester is a popular fabric in activewear and loungewear because it's lightweight and durable. It also helps pull sweat and moisture away from the body, helping to keep you dry during workouts or unexpected warm weather. Plus, it dries quickly and holds its shape well.
- Modal: This wood pulp–based, semi-synthetic fiber is breathable, extra soft, and highly absorbent. Like elastane, it also provides stretch to the fabric and is often blended with cotton.
Style
We tested an array of styles and silhouettes for this guide, but Appelt says the most important thing to keep in mind while shopping for sweatpants is your body type:
- Joggers: A slim-fit, tapered jogger (where the pant gets tighter toward the ankle) is flattering on petite, rectangular, and athletic body types as it helps avoid that “drowning in fabric” look and helps define the waist.
- Wide-leg or straight-leg: Appelt says if you have an inverted triangle shape, a wide or flared leg helps to balance out wider shoulders. This silhouette is also a good choice for anyone who wants a roomy fit throughout the entire leg.
Fit
Sweatpants are meant to be oversized, so you don’t have to worry as much about fit, as, say, jeans. But it’s important to make sure the pair you choose is still flattering. Look for a body-skimming fit that doesn’t cling too tightly to your thighs while sitting comfortably at your waist or hips. Also, pay attention to length. You don’t want your pant leg to drag on the ground while you walk, so consider options that come in petite, regular, and tall lengths, depending on your height.
How We Chose
I'm a style writer who's been testing activewear for years. I’ve covered everything from the best workout leggings to the best hoodies to the most comfortable slippers. For this story, I combed through my extensive testing, researched the best women’s sweatpants, and called in a bunch of sweats to try. I also consulted with two style experts on what to consider when shopping for sweatpants. Style contributor Lily Wohlner and stylists Kristen Saladino, Rose Lauture, and Alexandra Juric also weighed in on their favorite options.
For the last year and a half, we tested more than 50 sweatpants across seasons, from brisk winter mornings to sunny summer eves. What matters most? Adaptability. These picks strike the perfect balance between comfort, movement, and style. Expect breathable cotton blends, moisture-wicking trims, and chic silhouettes from top brands like Vuori, Alo, and Skims.
We selected sweatpants based on the following criteria:
- Material: We tested options in a range of fabric blends, weights, and textures. Most of our picks contain cotton for that super-soft feel, but we also enjoyed blends of lightweight polyester and stretchy elastane.
- Fit: We examined the way each pair fit—whether it was true to size, flattering, and came in an inclusive range of sizes.
- Quality: We noted how durable each pair of sweatpants seemed, based on how it held up to multiple wears and cycles in the washing machine and dryer. We also looked at other markers of quality like clean seams, drawstrings, and well-built cuffs.
- Style: Style was also a key consideration. We tested a range of cuts and silhouettes, and how easy they were to dress up or down.
